Самозарядная винтовка Токарева была первоначально принята на вооружение РККА в 1938 году под обозначением СВТ-38, в связи с тем, что ранее принятая на вооружение автоматическая винтовка Симонова АВС-36 имела ряд серьезных недостатков. По опыту эксплуатации в 1940 году был принят несколько облегченный вариант винтовки под обозначением СВТ-40. Выпуск винтовки СВТ-40 продолжался вплоть до 1945 года, в первой половине войны - нарастающими темпами, потом - все в меньших и меньших количествах.
